Personalised knee replacements
Simon White was the first surgeon in Wales to offer this technology having trained with the designer surgeon in the USA last year.
Allows assessment of your unique anatomy before the operation, and creation of customised surgical instruments to improve the accuracy and alignment of your knee replacement.
Benefits include enhanced range of movement, reduction in blood loss, improved rate of recovery.
Improved alignment is associated with increased life span of replacement.

Rapid Recovery Surgery
Simon performed the first case in Cardiff. This technique involves anaesthetic and surgical techniques to minimise the internal bruising and reduce the pain after replacement surgery. This improves the experience after surgery and allows patients to walk within hours of surgery. The length of stay in hospital can be reduced allowing patients to return to normal activites such as driving and leisure activities quicker. See www.rapid-recovery.co.uk for more information
Viscosupplementation injections
Monovisc/Synvisc
Now available at Spire Hospital, these injections are designed to replace the body's natural hyaluronic acid, providing pain relief in a single injection from the symptoms of osteoarthritis. They are valuable in the treatment of arthritis in younger patients or when replacement surgery is not desired.
Selective partial replacements
A new product allows replacement of 1/3, 2/3 or all 3 parts of the knee depending on the pattern of arthritis. This allows preservation of bone and ligaments, and is therefore beneficial in younger patients with advanced arthritis in whom bone conservation is desired.
This implant is now available at Spire Hospital and as an NHS patient.
